Hi Tom,
I wanted to send you an email to thank you for your part in the success I've enjoyed this past year in competitive bodybuilding.
I am a natural bodybuilder and I competed in two shows in 2001. Although I took a first and a second in a pairs competitions, the best I was able to place was a fifth and a third in the Master's Division in those two shows.
I made a decision to take the next year and a half off, do some research, and make real efforts toward shaping my physique before returning to the stage. In the interim, I read books, watched videos, and researched diet, weight training and posing material. I was led to your web site by friend.
I must tell you I was so refreshed to find not just any bodybuilder, but a NATURAL bodybuilder who was frank, honest, principled and not afraid to speak the truth! I am that way myself so I found I could easily relate to you and the material presented on your web site.
Your BFFM manual was so thorough and bluntly honest I chose it as my educational centerpiece for my nutrition and diet. I read it from cover to cover and then re-read it and then opened it again countless times during my several months of preparation.
My plans were to come out in 2003 and compete in four contests in the Pacific Northwest, culminating in the Bellevue Washington Ironman this past October. To make a long story short, I had an incredibly successful season. I am humbled and feel blessed to have taken first place and the overall in every contest I entered, including Open Divisions and Non-Tested competitions.
In 2003 I took the following titles:
MAY 17, 2003:
2003 OREGON IRONMAN NATURAL
1ST PLACE NOVICE MEN LIGHTWEIGHT
1ST PLACE MASTERS MEN (40 & OVER)
OVERALL CHAMPION NOVICE MEN
OVERALL CHAMPION MASTERS MEN
MAY 31, 2003
2003 NORTHWEST NATURAL BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS
1ST PLACE OPEN DIVISION LIGHTWEIGHT
OVERALL CHAMPION OPEN MEN
SEPTEMBER 13, 2003:
2003 EVERGREEN STATE BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS
1ST PLACE MASTERS MEN (40 & OVER)
OVERALL CHAMPION MASTERS MEN
1ST PLACE MIXED PAIRS
OCTOBER 4, 2003
2003 WASHINGTON IRONMAN BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS
1ST PLACE OPEN DIVISION LIGHTWEIGHT
1ST PLACE MIXED PAIR
I owe so much of my success to you and your program. When audience members come up to you after a show and make comments like "You are freaky lean!" "What is your diet secret" or "we were in awe at how unbelievably lean and ripped you looked," you know you have accomplished something.
I used no supplements with the following two exceptions: I used protein powder, but only to sweeten my grapefruit and oatmeal preferring to get my protein naturally. My fat burner contained ephedra (before the major scare came out regarding that supplement). That's it!
Neither creatine nor any of the other unending lists of supplements you are led to believe is needed to gain muscle and diet down. My success hinged solely on knowledge, hard training, and diet.
As part of my unexpected success this year, I've qualified to compete nationally.
I've attached a photo I thought you might enjoy. It displays the hardware I was blessed with winning this year.
Again, Tom, I can't thank you enough for your part in a very magical season for me. Your honesty, blunt truths despite how it may affect you with the "industry" and your dedication to the sport is truly an inspiration.
If you ever wonder if it is worth it, remember there are many others out there like me who are drawing upon your experience and advice even though you may not know about it. I have personally recommended your web site to anyone who approaches me at the gym or after contest with questions regarding bodybuilding and/or diet - and I will continue to do so.
Thanks again Tom,

P.S. I'm 44 years old. Although I have been working out with weights steadily over the past 26 years, I entered my first bodybuilding show in 2001 at the age of 42 (and then as I told you û I came out again in 2003 at age 44).
What I found most interesting is that it has been the Masters Divisions, both men and women, that have increased dramatically in terms of the numbers of competitors/competition relative to any other division. In two contests the Masters Over 40 division had 15 or more competitors (the womens divisions had even more!).
Finally, regarding age; after being blessed with doing so well in the Master Division competitions, I decided to really challenge myself by going open division which put me up against 20 and 30 year old competitors. I was able to be competitive there as well, again taking first place and overall titles. So, as you well know, age is not an obstacle.
