I’ve seen all those crazy ads too: A quick web search on “lose pounds” brought up these results in just seconds:

“Drop 30 pounds in 30 days”… “Cut 10 pounds this weekend”… “Lose 9 pounds every 11 days” … Lose 7 pounds in 7 days” … “3 day diet - lose 10 pounds in 3 days”…

...And that's only a fraction of the ads that popped up in the first few pages of Google.

The entire diet industry is based on claims of quick weight loss in a short amount of time – it’s the most powerful promise - and usually the word “easy” is part of the pitch.

I don't know about you, but I sense that a lot of people are getting sick of this. After years of trying all the miracle diets and magic pills that promised fast results, but failed to deliver, people are becoming distrusting and downright cynical.

And yet in all my 22+ years as a fitness professional and fat loss coach, I’ve learned that people WANT answers about this. These are the questions that never stop coming in:

"How long will it take?” "How quickly can I lose weight on your program?"

This isn’t just because people are impatient by nature, it’s because human beings don’t like uncertainty – they want to know what to expect.

I don’t blame them. This question deserves an answer. In fact, I think it’s a MUST to set specific goals for specific time frames.

But this can get tricky: If you set your goals too high, you set yourself up for disappointment. If you set your goals too low, you sell yourself short.

We’ve now proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you can create measurable, visible results – dramatic results that others will notice – in as little as 49 days.

This is true whether you’re already fairly lean or you’re seriously overweight...

  • If you’re already lean, you can get ripped with 6-pack abs in 49 days

We held the contest over the holidays, from Thanksgiving through the new year into early January. That “holiday challenge” just happened to be a 7-week period… 49 days.

At first people said we were crazy to have a body transformation contest during the busiest, most stressful and most temptation-filled time of the year.

The skeptics also said that 7 weeks wasn’t long enough to see any really major body changes. You needed at least 3 or 4 months for that, they scoffed, much longer if you were obese or overweight.

In spite of the naysayers, thousands of men and women of every body shape and size; every walk of life, and every age group, accepted my 49-day challenge.

After documenting their results with photos, weigh-ins, body fat testing, weekly progress reporting and strict date verification, hundreds of them finished the challenge… and by day 49, the end result was:

They achieved more body changes in those 7 short weeks than they ever thought possible!!!

Re-thinking Your Fitness Goals:
Have You Set The Bar TOO LOW?

Maybe you’ve heard the S.M.A.R.T. goals formula: Specific, measurable, accountable, realistic and time-bound. That’ a GOOD acronym to remember, and making your goals realistic is an important part of it.

It’s been said that there are few unrealistic goals, mostly just unrealistic deadlines.

But the results of our new challenge made us realize that under a certain set of circumstances and with just the right goal deadline, the odds of a spectacular “results not typical” body transformation increase dramatically.

This doesn’t change anything I believe about setting long term goals, embracing goal setting as a habit or making health and fitness a lifestyle… it only adds a new twist.

Long term goals – those that span a year or more – are vitally important. But there’s a problem if you only think long term: It’s difficult to keep up your motivation and action in the present moment with the target so far away. You tend to rationalize: “I have plenty of time, so if I miss this one workout, or cheat on this one meal, it won’t matter.”

Short term goals are equally important because reaching daily goals gives you a confidence boost. Weekly results serve as a compass or guidance system which tells you exactly what to tweak in your nutrition and training each week to keep the results coming.

If you don’t get frequent feedback by setting short term goals and measuring your progress against them, you easily drift off track. By the time you make a course correction, you’ve wasted days, weeks or even months without payback.

This brings me back full circle to that “How long will it take” question...

I wondered… what if a shorter time frame actually INCREASED the urgency to produce results? What if you picked a time frame that was:

  • Short enough that you knew every workout and every meal mattered, which maximized your motivation and kept you totally focused
  • Long enough that you could measure and see dramatic results
  • Broken up into one week blocks allowing easy progress tracking and fast course corrections

And what if you attacked this goal under highly-motivating conditions which included:

  • Social Support
  • Accountability
  • Rewards, recognition and prizes

What we discovered is that the urgency of a 49-day goal combined with the right motivational leverage conjured up the “perfect storm” for breathtaking body transformations.

So what’s the bottom line?
What kind of results can you achieve in 49 days?

It is pretty well-established that "typical" weight loss on a well-designed program is usually 1 to 2 pounds per week. One percent of total body weight or 3 pounds a week is not uncommon if you have a lot of weight to lose. (larger and heavier people can lose weight faster than short, lean or smaller people).

Beyond that, I can't make any claims or predictions about your 49-day results.

The truth is, I don’t know what you’ll accomplish – only you can decide that by how hard you're willing to work at it.

What I can tell you is that above average results ARE possible with the right program, under the right conditions, combined with a healthy dose of hard work.

I can also tell you that if you do it the Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle way, you won’t just lose body weight, you’ll lose body fat and keep the lean muscle. If you choose, you can even gain lean muscle while losing fat at the same time: that rare achievement also known as "body re-composition."

From the back, what you see there is called the classic "V-taper" - that much-envied, much sought-after wide-shouldered, wide-backed, tapering-into-a-small-waist look. You're also sure to notice this: Love handles.... GONE!

From the front, Chris looks a lot like a bodybuilder. Truth be told, Chris doesn't compete on stage. He's just a regular dude - a 42-year old dad - who woke up one morning and said to himself, "I've become one of those "skinny fat" people...

Chris only weighed 171 pounds in the before photo - clearly not overWEIGHT by any height-weight chart standards, but his body fat before was 19%... that's pushing the upper range for men where you're borderline "overFAT."

Chris came across Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle and learned about body composition and how to alter it naturally with nutrition and exercise. He received the invitation to the Holiday challenge and dove in head first. After just 49 days, Chris's body fat had dropped from 19% to 10%. His body weight dropped down to 158 pounds.

If you do the math on that, you'll calculate that Chris burned 16.7 pounds of fat and gained 3.7 pounds of lean body mass. That is a VERY large drop in body fat relative to a 171 pound starting weight and you can clearly see the new muscle in the pictures.

It's all about the symmetry, proportions (having muscle in the right places) and being nicely cut, with a low body fat percentage.

Linda shredded 17 excess pounds, slashed her body fat 8.6% (down from 27.9% to 19.3%) added on 2.1 pounds of lean body mass, and flattened her belly - all in just 49 days (not to mention, she survived a bikini photo shoot in the snow!)

Like Chris, Linda is another person who understands the importance of body composition versus body weight. Linda wrote: "Becoming just a smaller version of myself just wasn't good enough anymore. This time I was focusing on building and preserving lean muscle."
